Shri Bhagavan said: "Again, O mighty-armed one, hear My supreme word, which I shall speak to you, beloved, wishing your good. Neither the hosts of gods nor the great sages know My origin, for I am, in every respect, the beginning of the gods and the great sages. Whoever among mortals knows Me as unborn, beginningless, and the great Lord of the worlds is unbewildered and is freed from all sins. Intellect, knowledge, clarity, patience, truthfulness, restraint, tranquility, happiness and sorrow, arising and ceasing, fear and fearlessness, nonviolence, equanimity, contentment, austerity, generosity, fame and infamy — all these various states of beings arise from Me alone. The seven ancient great sages and the four Manus, born of My mind and partaking of My nature, became the source of these beings in the world. Whoever knows in truth this My vibhuti and yoga is joined by unshakable yoga; of this there is no doubt."

Krishna opens the chapter from the foundation: His greatness is not derived from the gods or sages, for they themselves issue from Him. Knowing Him as the unborn Lord of the worlds frees one from sin and makes yoga steady.
