"Sattva, rajas, and tamas are the gunas born of prakriti, O mighty-armed one; they bind the imperishable embodied soul within the body. Sattva, by its very purity, is luminous and free from affliction, yet it binds through attachment to happiness and attachment to knowledge, O sinless one. Know rajas as having the nature of passion, arising from craving and attachment; it binds the embodied soul through attachment to action, O son of Kunti. Know tamas as born of ignorance, deluding all embodied beings; it binds through negligence, laziness, and sleep, O Bharata. Sattva attaches one to happiness, rajas to action, and tamas, covering knowledge, attaches one to negligence."

Even sattva remains a guna and can therefore bind, if a person clings to clarity, happiness, or knowledge as personal possessions. The gunas differ in quality, but all of them hold the soul within the field of prakriti until consciousness turns toward Krishna.
