Gangeya struck Partha in battle with nine arrows, and Arjuna in return pierced him with ten arrows striking the vital points. Then Arjuna, glorious in combat, with a thousand skillfully loosed arrows, shut off every quarter around Bhishma. But Bhishma, son of Shantanu, warded off Partha's net of arrows with an equal net of his own. Both were utterly exhilarated, both rejoiced in the battle and fought as equals, answering blow with blow. The masses of arrows loosed from Bhishma's bow were seen scattering apart, cut through by Arjuna's arrows; likewise the nets of arrows shot by Arjuna, knocked down by Gangeya's arrows, fell to the ground. Arjuna struck Bhishma with twenty-five sharp arrows, and Bhishma in battle pierced Partha with thirty arrows. The two mighty destroyers of foes struck each other's horses and banners, chariot-poles and wheels, as if at play in battle. Then Bhishma, enraged, the finest of strikers, struck Vasudeva with three arrows in the chest, O great king. Madhusudana, pierced by the arrows loosed from Bhishma's bow, shone in battle, O king, like a flowering kimshuka tree. Then Arjuna, greatly enraged at seeing Madhava wounded, in the fight pierced Gangeya's charioteer with three arrows. These two heroes strove to slay one another, but then in battle could not find a deadly mark. Through the skill and dexterity of their charioteers, they displayed in many ways varied circling movements, advances and retreats. Both great chariot-warriors, watching for an opening to strike, again and again found themselves standing in the path of that very opening. They raised the sound of conches mingled with lion-roars, and the twang of their bows likewise. From their blaring of conches and the rumble of their wheel-rims, the earth, as though rent apart, suddenly trembled and resounded. No one could see any difference between them, O best of the Bharatas: both were mighty, valiant in battle, and alike to one another. The Kauravas recognized Bhishma only by his emblem, and the sons of Pandu likewise recognized Partha only by his emblem. Beholding the valor of these two finest warriors, all beings were struck with wonder, O Bharata. No one could discern any flaw in them in battle, just as no one anywhere sees sin in one who stands firm in dharma. Both would vanish behind the net of arrows and then swiftly become visible again in the fight.

The duel between Bhishma and Arjuna is described as an almost equal clash of two pure warrior forces. But the presence of the wounded Krishna deepens the scene: even when the Lord takes the role of charioteer, His close devotee is not indifferent to His pain.
