अर्जुनस् तु ततः क्रुद्धस् तव सैन्यं विशां पते ॥
ववर्ष शरवर्षेण धाराभिर् इव तोयदः ॥
वध्यमानं ततस् तत् तु शरैः पार्थस्य संयुगे ॥
दुद्राव कौरवं सैन्यं विषादभयकम्पितम् ॥
द्रवतस् तान् समालोक्य भीष्मद्रोणौ महारथौ ॥
न्यवारयेतां संरब्धौ दुर्योधनहितैषिणौ ॥
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा समाश्वस्य विशां पते ॥
न्यवर्तयत तत् सैन्यं द्रवमाणं समन्ततः ॥
यत्र यत्र सुतं तुभ्यं यो यः पश्यति भारत ॥
तत्र तत्र न्यवर्तन्त क्षत्रियाणां महारथाः ॥
तान् निवृत्तान् समीक्ष्यैव ततो ऽन्ये ऽपीतरे जनाः ॥
अन्योन्यस्पर्धया राजंल् लज्जयान्ये ऽवतस्थिरे ॥
पुनरावर्ततां तेषां वेग आसीद् विशां पते ॥
पूर्यतः सागरस्येव चन्द्रस्योदयनं प्रति ॥
संनिवृत्तांस् ततस् तांस् तु दृष्ट्वा राजा सुयोधनः ॥
अब्रवीत् त्वरितो गत्वा भीष्मं शांतनवं वचः ॥

vavarṣa śaravarṣeṇa dhārābhir iva toyadaḥ ||
vadhyamānaṃ tatas tat tu śaraiḥ pārthasya saṃyuge ||
dudrāva kauravaṃ sainyaṃ viṣādabhayakampitam ||
dravatas tān samālokya bhīṣmadroṇau mahārathau ||
nyavārayetāṃ saṃrabdhau duryodhanahitaiṣiṇau ||
tato duryodhano rājā samāśvasya viśāṃ pate ||
nyavartayata tat sainyaṃ dravamāṇaṃ samantataḥ ||
yatra yatra sutaṃ tubhyaṃ yo yaḥ paśyati bhārata ||
tatra tatra nyavartanta kṣatriyāṇāṃ mahārathāḥ ||
tān nivṛttān samīkṣyaiva tato 'nye 'pītare janāḥ ||
anyonyaspardhayā rājaṃl lajjayānye 'vatasthire ||
punarāvartatāṃ teṣāṃ vega āsīd viśāṃ pate ||
pūryataḥ sāgarasyeva candrasyodayanaṃ prati ||
saṃnivṛttāṃs tatas tāṃs tu dṛṣṭvā rājā suyodhanaḥ ||
abravīt tvarito gatvā bhīṣmaṃ śāṃtanavaṃ vacaḥ ||
Then Arjuna, enraged, O lord of men, showered your army with a rain of arrows, as a cloud pours down its torrents. Struck by Partha's arrows in battle, the Kaurava army fled, trembling with despondency and fear. Seeing them flee, Bhishma and Drona, the great chariot-warriors, wishing well for Duryodhana, furiously strove to hold them back. Then king Duryodhana, having come to himself, halted that army as it scattered in every direction, O lord of men. Wherever the kshatriya maharathas caught sight of your son, there they turned back, O Bharata. Seeing that they had halted, the other men too stood their ground — some out of rivalry with one another, others out of shame. As they turned back, their surge became like the swelling ocean rising to meet the moon at its ascent, O lord of men. Seeing that they had returned, king Suyodhana hastened up to Bhishma, son of Shantanu, and spoke to him."
