Bhishma said: "Vasudeva is the great Existent One, manifested together with the deities. There is nothing higher than the lotus-eyed one to be seen, O bull of the Bharatas; and Markandeya describes Govinda as great and wondrous. Purushottama, the great-souled Atman of all beings, arranged the three elements: water, wind, and fire. Having created the earth, this God, the Lord and ruler of all worlds, the supreme Purusha, made His couch upon the waters; consisting of all waters, He by the power of yoga sank there into sleep. From His mouth He created fire, from His breath the wind; and Sarasvati and the Vedas the Unfallen One created from His mind. In the beginning He created the worlds, the gods together with the hosts of sages, dissolution and death; He is the imperishable source of beings. He is dharma and the knower of dharma, the boon-giver who grants all desires. He is the doer and the deed, the primeval God and self-powerful. Janardana established from the beginning the past, the future, and what is to come, both twilights, the directions, space, and law."

Bhishma's answer opens with cosmogony: Vasudeva does not appear within an already finished world but is its source, its law, and its goal. So the question about His "origin" unfolds into an affirmation of His primacy.
