"The imperishable, great-souled Lord Govinda also established the sages, austerity, and the creator of the world. He manifested Sankarshana, the firstborn of all beings, and created the divine Shesha, whom they know as Ananta. Him, the mighty one, the brahmins in the yoga of meditation call the one who upholds all beings and this earth together with its mountains. The great asura named Madhu, born from the stream of the ear, fierce, terrible in deeds, and possessed of a dreadful intent, Purushottama slew, showing honor to Brahma. Precisely because of his slaying, gods, danavas, men, and sages call Janardana by the name Madhusudana. This Lord is Varaha, Narasimha, and Trivikrama. He is Hari, the mother and father of all living beings. Higher than the lotus-eyed one there has not been and there will not be anything."

Bhishma is not listing abstract titles but acts of the Lord: He creates, sustains, descends as an avatara, and destroys Madhu. The names of Vasudeva unfold as a record of His deeds.
