तस्मिन् महाभये घोरे तुमुले लोमहर्षणे ॥
ववर्षुः शरवर्षाणि क्षत्रिया युद्धदुर्मदाः ॥
क्रोशन्ति कुञ्जरास् तत्र शरवर्षप्रतापिताः ॥
तावकानां परेषां च संयुगे भरतोत्तम ॥
अश्वाश् च पर्यधावन्त हतारोहा दिशो दश ॥
उत्पत्य निपतन्त्य् अन्ये शरघातप्रपीडिताः ॥
तावकानां परेषां च योधानां भरतर्षभ ॥
अश्वानां कुञ्जराणां च रथानां चातिवर्तताम् ॥
संघाताः स्म प्रदृश्यन्ते तत्र तत्र विशां पते ॥
गदाभिर् असिभिः प्रासैर् बाणैश् च नतपर्वभिः ॥
जघ्नुः परस्परं तत्र क्षत्रियाः कालचोदिताः ॥
अपरे बाहुभिर् वीरा नियुद्धकुशला युधि ॥
बहुधा समसज्जन्त आयसैः परिघैर् इव ॥
मुष्टिभिर् जानुभिश् चैव तलैश् चैव विशां पते ॥
अन्योन्यं जघ्निरे वीरास् तावकाः पाण्डवैः सह ॥

vavarṣuḥ śaravarṣāṇi kṣatriyā yuddhadurmadāḥ ||
krośanti kuñjarās tatra śaravarṣapratāpitāḥ ||
tāvakānāṃ pareṣāṃ ca saṃyuge bharatottama ||
aśvāś ca paryadhāvanta hatārohā diśo daśa ||
utpatya nipatanty anye śaraghātaprapīḍitāḥ ||
tāvakānāṃ pareṣāṃ ca yodhānāṃ bharatarṣabha ||
aśvānāṃ kuñjarāṇāṃ ca rathānāṃ cātivartatām ||
saṃghātāḥ sma pradṛśyante tatra tatra viśāṃ pate ||
gadābhir asibhiḥ prāsair bāṇaiś ca nataparvabhiḥ ||
jaghnuḥ parasparaṃ tatra kṣatriyāḥ kālacoditāḥ ||
apare bāhubhir vīrā niyuddhakuśalā yudhi ||
bahudhā samasajjanta āyasaiḥ parighair iva ||
muṣṭibhir jānubhiś caiva talaiś caiva viśāṃ pate ||
anyonyaṃ jaghnire vīrās tāvakāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ||
In that great, terrible, tumultuous, hair-raising peril, the kshatriyas, maddened by battle, poured down showers of arrows. There, in the fighting of your warriors and the enemy, O best of the Bharatas, elephants cried out, tormented by the rain of arrows. Horses whose riders had been slain ran riderless in every direction; others, struck by blows of arrows, leaped up and fell among the warriors of your side and of the foe, O bull of the Bharatas. Everywhere collisions of racing horses, elephants, and chariots could be seen, O lord of men. With maces, swords, javelins, and well-jointed arrows the kshatriyas, driven on by time, struck one another down. Other heroes, skilled in hand-to-hand combat, grappled in many ways in the fight, like iron bars locked together; with fists, knees, and the palms of their hands, O lord of men, your warriors and the Pandavas struck one another."

The word kalacoditah — "driven on by time" — sets the tone of the whole scene. The warriors act as heroes, but behind their deeds time itself already stands, leading their bodies toward destruction.
