Sanjaya said: "Then Bhishma, son of Shantanu, waged a fierce battle, wishing to save your sons from fear of Bhimasena. Before noon a most terrible battle of the kings raged, of the Kurus and the Pandavas, destroying the foremost heroes. In that confused battle, amid great terror, a tumultuous sound arose, touching the high sky. The roar of great elephants, the neighing of horses, and the blare of drums and conches merged into a tumultuous roar. The valiant and mighty warriors, eager to fight for victory, roared at one another like great bulls in their pens."

Bhishma enters the battle as the protector of Dhritarashtra's sons against Bhima, yet the scene already reaches beyond individual heroes: the field becomes an element of noise, fear, and mutual fury.
