संजय उवाच
परिणाम्य निशां तां तु सुखसुप्ता जनेश्वराः ॥
कुरवः पाण्डवाश् चैव पुनर् युद्धाय निर्ययुः ॥
ततः शब्दो महान् आसीत् सेनयोर् उभयोर् अपि ॥
निर्गच्छमानयोः संख्ये सागरप्रतिमो महान् ॥
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा चित्रसेनो विविंशतिः ॥
भीष्मश् च रथिनां श्रेष्ठो भारद्वाजश् च वै द्विजः ॥
एकीभूताः सुसंयत्ताः कौरवाणां महाचमूः ॥
व्यूहाय विदधू राजन् पाण्डवान् प्रति दंशिताः ॥
भीष्मः कृत्वा महाव्यूहं पिता तव विशां पते ॥
सागरप्रतिमं घोरं वाहनोर्मितरङ्गिणम् ॥
अग्रतः सर्वसैन्यानां भीष्मः शांतनवो ययौ ॥
मालवैर् दाक्षिणात्यैश् च आवन्त्यैश् च समन्वितः ॥
ततो ऽनन्तरम् एवासीद् भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ॥
पुलिन्दैः पारदैश् चैव तथा क्षुद्रकमालवैः ॥
द्रोणाद् अनन्तरं यत्तो भगदत्तः प्रतापवान् ॥
मागधैश् च कलिङ्गैश् च पिशाचैश् च विशां पते ॥
प्राग्ज्योतिषाद् अनु नृपः कौसल्यो ऽथ बृहद्बलः ॥
मेकलैस् त्रैपुरैश् चैव चिच्छिलैश् च समन्वितः ॥
बृहद्बलात् ततः शूरस् त्रिगर्तः प्रस्थलाधिपः ॥
काम्बोजैर् बहुभिः सार्धं यवनैश् च सहस्रशः ॥
द्रौणिस् तु रभसः शूरस् त्रिगर्ताद् अनु भारत ॥
प्रययौ सिंहनादेन नादयानो धरातलम् ॥
तथा सर्वेण सैन्येन राजा दुर्योधनस् तदा ॥
द्रौणेर् अनन्तरं प्रायात् सोदर्यैः परिवारितः ॥
दुर्योधनाद् अनु कृपस् ततः शारद्वतो ययौ ॥
एवम् एष महाव्यूहः प्रययौ सागरोपमः ॥
रेजुस् तत्र पताकाश् च श्वेतच्छत्राणि चाभिभो ॥
अङ्गदान्य् अथ चित्राणि महार्हाणि धनूंषि च ॥

bhīṣmaś ca rathināṃ śreṣṭho bhāradvājaś ca vai dvijaḥ ||
ekībhūtāḥ susaṃyattāḥ kauravāṇāṃ mahācamūḥ ||
vyūhāya vidadhū rājan pāṇḍavān prati daṃśitāḥ ||
bhīṣmaḥ kṛtvā mahāvyūhaṃ pitā tava viśāṃ pate ||
sāgarapratimaṃ ghoraṃ vāhanormitaraṅgiṇam ||
agrataḥ sarvasainyānāṃ bhīṣmaḥ śāṃtanavo yayau ||
mālavair dākṣiṇātyaiś ca āvantyaiś ca samanvitaḥ ||
tato 'nantaram evāsīd bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān ||
pulindaiḥ pāradaiś caiva tathā kṣudrakamālavaiḥ ||
droṇād anantaraṃ yatto bhagadattaḥ pratāpavān ||
māgadhaiś ca kaliṅgaiś ca piśācaiś ca viśāṃ pate ||
prāgjyotiṣād anu nṛpaḥ kausalyo 'tha bṛhadbalaḥ ||
mekalais traipuraiś caiva cicchilaiś ca samanvitaḥ ||
bṛhadbalāt tataḥ śūras trigartaḥ prasthalādhipaḥ ||
kāmbojair bahubhiḥ sārdhaṃ yavanaiś ca sahasraśaḥ ||
drauṇis tu rabhasaḥ śūras trigartād anu bhārata ||
prayayau siṃhanādena nādayāno dharātalam ||
tathā sarveṇa sainyena rājā duryodhanas tadā ||
drauṇer anantaraṃ prāyāt sodaryaiḥ parivāritaḥ ||
duryodhanād anu kṛpas tataḥ śāradvato yayau ||
evam eṣa mahāvyūhaḥ prayayau sāgaropamaḥ ||
rejus tatra patākāś ca śvetacchatrāṇi cābhibho ||
aṅgadāny atha citrāṇi mahārhāṇi dhanūṃṣi ca ||
Sanjaya said: "When that night had passed, the kings, who had slept happily, the Kurus and the Pandavas alike, went forth again to battle. Then a great roar arose in both armies as they marched out to the fight, mighty as the ocean. Then king Duryodhana, Chitrasena, Vivinshati, Bhishma, the finest of charioteers, and the brahmin Bharadvaja-Drona, having united and made ready, arrayed the great army of the Kauravas in battle formation against the Pandavas, O king. Bhishma, thy forefather, lord of the peoples, formed a vast and terrible array, like unto the ocean, surging with rows of war-chariots. At the head of all the armies went Bhishma, son of Shantanu, together with the Malavas, the southerners, and the Avantyas. Immediately behind him stood the valiant Drona with the Pulindas, the Paradas, and the Kshudraka-Malavas. Behind Drona, gathered and mighty, came Bhagadatta with the Magadhas, the Kalingas, and the Pishachas, O lord of the peoples. Following the king of Pragjyotisha came Brihadbala of Kosala, together with the Mekalas, the Traipuras, and the Cicchilas. After Brihadbala came the hero, the Trigarta lord of Prasthala, with many Kambojas and thousands of Yavanas. And behind the Trigarta, O Bharata, advanced the swift hero Ashvatthaman, son of Drona, with a lion's roar, making the surface of the earth resound. Following Ashvatthaman came king Duryodhana with his whole army, surrounded by his own brothers. Behind Duryodhana came Kripa, son of Sharadvan. Thus this great array, like unto the ocean, moved forward. There banners shone, and white royal parasols, colorful armlets, and precious bows."
