Thus, when Bhishma of great might, the summit of the Kurus, fell, the Pandavas and the Srinjayas let out a lion's roar. When this greatest of the Bharatas was struck down, your sons, O bull of the Bharatas, no longer knew what to do, and heavy confusion seized the Kurus. The kings led by Duryodhana sighed and then wept; from grief they stood for a long time as though their senses had left them. They sank into thought and no longer kept their minds on the war; as if shackled, they did not rush upon the Pandavas. When the unslayable son of Shantanu, the mighty Bhishma, was struck down, a great calamity overtook the Kurus, O king. 'Our finest heroes are slain, we are cut down by sharp arrows, we are vanquished by Savyasachin, and we do not know our duty.' The Pandavas, however, having won victory and the highest path in the world beyond, all blew their great conch shells; the mighty-armed heroes, the Somakas and the Panchalas, rejoiced greatly, O lord of men. Then, as thousands of trumpets sounded, the mighty Bhimasena slapped himself loudly and danced. In both armies, when Gangeya had fallen, the heroes laid down their weapons and everywhere gave themselves to reflection. Some cried out and fell, others fainted; some condemned the warrior code, while others honored Bhishma. The sages and the ancestors praised the one of the great vow; the Bharatas of former times also glorified him. And the valiant, wise Shantanava, having taken his stand in the great upanishad and in yoga, repeating his mantra, remained there awaiting his hour.

Bhishma's fall brings the war to a halt: both armies lay down their weapons for a moment. For the Kurus it is the collapse of their support, for the Pandavas, victory - but for Bhishma himself it is a passage into a yogic waiting for the hour of departure.
