यत् तद् उद्यन्न् इवादित्यो ज्योतिषा प्रणुदंस् तमः ॥
आयाद् अजातशत्रुर् वै कस् तं द्रोणाद् अवारयत् ॥
प्रभिन्नम् इव मातङ्गं तथा क्रुद्धं तरस्विनम् ॥
आसक्तमनसं दीप्तं प्रतिद्विरदघातिनम् ॥
वाशितासंगमे यद्वद् अजय्यं प्रतियूथपैः ॥
अति चान्यान् रणे योधान् वीरः पुरुषसत्तमः ॥
यो ह्य् एको हि महाबाहुर् निर्दहेद् घोरचक्षुषा ॥
कृत्स्नं दुर्योधनबलं धृतिमान् सत्यसंगरः ॥
चक्षुर्हणं जये सक्तम् इष्वासवररक्षितम् ॥
दान्तं बहुमतं लोके के शूराः पर्यवारयन् ॥
के दुष्प्रधर्षं राजानम् इष्वासवरम् अच्युतम् ॥
समासेदुर् नरव्याघ्रं कौन्तेयं तत्र मामकाः ॥

kṛtsnaṃ duryodhanabalaṃ dhṛtimān satyasaṃgaraḥ ||
cakṣurhaṇaṃ jaye saktam iṣvāsavararakṣitam ||
dāntaṃ bahumataṃ loke ke śūrāḥ paryavārayan ||
ke duṣpradharṣaṃ rājānam iṣvāsavaram acyutam ||
samāsedur naravyāghraṃ kaunteyaṃ tatra māmakāḥ ||
When Ajatashatru [Yudhishthira] was advancing, like the rising sun dispelling darkness with its radiance — who then held him back from Drona? That hero, most excellent among men — furious as an elephant in rut, so wrathful, swift, single-minded, blazing, destroying enemy elephants and surpassing other warriors in battle; he who alone, mighty-armed, could incinerate [his foe] with a terrible glance — this one, intent on victory with his wrathful gaze, guarded by an excellent bowman, self-controlled, highly esteemed in the world — what heroes restrained him? What men of mine attacked the unconquerable king, the excellent bowman, the unwavering tiger-among-men, Kaunteya [Yudhishthira]?

Dhritarashtra praises Yudhishthira with the image of the rising sun dispelling darkness — and in this comparison lies an unwilling truth: the king of dharma is light, before which the darkness of wrong retreats. It is telling that among the fearsome traits of the warrior 'self-mastery' (dānta) is named: Yudhishthira's valor is fused with self-command, and so his gaze, capable of 'incinerating,' is not willful but righteous. The enemy himself acknowledges him as 'highly esteemed in the world' and 'unwavering.' The verse teaches that a warrior's true greatness lies in the union of power and self-control; that the light of righteousness is recognized even by the adversary; and that the one who asks 'who held back the sun?' testifies, without meaning to, that before the rising light of dharma darkness has no power to stay its rising.
