द्रौपदेया नरव्याघ्राः समुद्रम् इव सिन्धवः ॥
यद् द्रोणम् आद्रवन् संख्ये के वीरास् तान् अवारयन् ॥
ये ते द्वादश वर्षाणि क्रीडाम् उत्सृज्य बालकाः ॥
अस्त्रार्थम् अवसन् भीष्मे बिभ्रतो व्रतम् उत्तमम् ॥
क्षत्रंजयः क्षत्रदेवः क्षत्रधर्मा च मानिनः ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नात्मजा वीराः के तान् द्रोणाद् अवारयन् ॥
शताद् विशिष्टं यं युद्धे समपश्यन्त वृष्णयः ॥
चेकितानं महेष्वासं कस् तं द्रोणाद् अवारयत् ॥

dhṛṣṭadyumnātmajā vīrāḥ ke tān droṇād avārayan ||
śatād viśiṣṭaṃ yaṃ yuddhe samapaśyanta vṛṣṇayaḥ ||
cekitānaṃ maheṣvāsaṃ kas taṃ droṇād avārayat ||
The sons of Draupadi, tigers among men, [rushing] at Drona in battle as rivers [flow] into the ocean -- what heroes held them back? Those who, still boys, having cast aside childhood's pastimes for twelve years, lived with Bhishma for the sake of mastering weapons, keeping the strictest vow -- Kshatranjaya, Kshatradeva, and Kshatradharman, proud heroes, sons of Dhrishtadyumna -- what heroes restrained them from Drona? Chekitana, the great bowman, whom the Vrishnis in battle regarded as worth more than a hundred [warriors] -- who held him back from Drona?

Recalled here are the boys who 'for twelve years cast aside childhood's pastimes' for the sake of learning: true mastery is forged by long self-denial, and the young renounced play for its sake. Herein lies a lesson on the price of every perfection: it is not given freely but through a strict vow and years of labor. It is telling that these young men, too, stand on the side of the Pandavas, trained by the very Bhishma who has now fallen. The verse teaches that great skill is the fruit of long renunciation, not of one man's natural gift alone; that youth which gives its years to learning instead of play gains what cannot otherwise be bought; and that the fruits of true upbringing serve the truth -- for those trained in dharma stand up for dharma.
