ततो दुर्योधनश् चिन्त्य कर्णदुःशासनादिभिः ॥
तम् अथोवाच दुर्धर्षम् आचार्यं जयतां वरम् ॥
ददासि चेद् वरं मह्यं जीवग्राहं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥
गृहीत्वा रथिनां श्रेष्ठं मत्समीपम् इहानय ॥

Then Duryodhana, having taken counsel with Karna, Duhshasana, and the others, spoke thus to that unassailable preceptor, foremost among the victorious: "If you grant me a boon -- seize Yudhishthira, best of chariot-warriors, alive, and bring him here to me."

Duryodhana asks not for valor, not for victory in honest battle, but for a "capture alive": already in the very request lies greed, seeking not the triumph of arms but a fresh humiliation of his rival. It is telling that he "takes counsel with Karna and the others" before asking -- his scheme is not impulse but calculated cunning. Drona, however, takes the request for a noble one -- so a pure heart credits purity to another. The verse teaches that the very form of a desire lays bare the heart of the one desiring; that evil plots its moves in company, while goodness trusts freely; and that a pure soul is inclined to see in a neighbor's request more good than it holds -- a nobility that can be deceived.
