स चापक्रम्यतां युद्धाद् येनोपायेन शक्यते ॥
अपनीते ततः पार्थे धर्मराजो जितस् त्वया ॥
ग्रहणं चेज् जयं तस्य मन्यसे पुरुषर्षभ ॥
एतेन चाभ्युपायेन ध्रुवं ग्रहणम् एष्यति ॥
अहं गृहीत्वा राजानं सत्यधर्मपरायणम् ॥
आनयिष्यामि ते राजन् वशम् अद्य न संशयः ॥
यदि स्थास्यति संग्रामे मुहूर्तम् अपि मे ऽग्रतः ॥
अपनीते नरव्याघ्रे कुन्तीपुत्रे धनंजये ॥
फल्गुनस्य समक्षं तु न हि पार्थो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
ग्रहीतुं समरे शक्यः सेन्द्रैर् अपि सुरासुरैः ॥

apanīte tataḥ pārthe dharmarājo jitas tvayā ||
grahaṇaṃ cej jayaṃ tasya manyase puruṣarṣabha ||
etena cābhyupāyena dhruvaṃ grahaṇam eṣyati ||
ahaṃ gṛhītvā rājānaṃ satyadharmaparāyaṇam ||
ānayiṣyāmi te rājan vaśam adya na saṃśayaḥ ||
yadi sthāsyati saṃgrāme muhūrtam api me 'grataḥ ||
apanīte naravyāghre kuntīputre dhanaṃjaye ||
phalgunasya samakṣaṃ tu na hi pārtho yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
grahītuṃ samare śakyaḥ sendrair api surāsuraiḥ ||
[Drona:] Let him [Arjuna] be drawn away from the battle by whatever means can be found; once Partha [Arjuna] is removed, Dharmaraja [Yudhishthira] is as good as conquered by you. If you, O foremost of men, count his capture as victory, then by this stratagem his seizure will surely come to pass. Having seized the king, who is devoted to truth and dharma, I will deliver him into your power this very day, O king -- there is no doubt of it -- provided he stands before me in battle even a moment, once the tiger among men, Kunti's son Dhananjaya [Arjuna], has been drawn away. For in the sight of Phalguna [Arjuna], Partha Yudhishthira cannot be taken in battle even by the gods with Indra, [even] by gods and demons.

The whole plan hinges on a single condition -- draw Arjuna away: while the guardian stands by the one guarded, the righteous man cannot be overcome. Here lies a deep image: Yudhishthira is unassailable as long as Arjuna is beside him, just as the soul is untouched as long as its protection from above remains near it. Only by separating the righteous man from his stronghold can he be overcome -- and so every evil first seeks to part the guarded one from the guardian. The verse teaches that the righteous cannot be broken while not cut off from their protector; that evil, powerless against the union of truth and its guardian, schemes to sever that union; and that vigilance means not letting oneself be drawn away from the one who is, and in whom lies, our true refuge.
