संजय उवाच
सान्तरं तु प्रतिज्ञाते राज्ञो द्रोणेन निग्रहे ॥
गृहीतं तम् अमन्यन्त तव पुत्राः सुबालिशाः ॥
पाण्डवेषु हि सापेक्षं द्रोणं जानाति ते सुतः ॥
ततः प्रतिज्ञास्थैर्यार्थं स मन्त्रो बहुलीकृतः ॥
ततो दुर्योधनेनापि ग्रहणं पाण्डवस्य तत् ॥
सैन्यस्थानेषु सर्वेषु व्याघोषितम् अरिंदम ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
sāntaraṃ tu pratijñāte rājño droṇena nigrahe ||
gṛhītaṃ tam amanyanta tava putrāḥ subāliśāḥ ||
pāṇḍaveṣu hi sāpekṣaṃ droṇaṃ jānāti te sutaḥ ||
tataḥ pratijñāsthairyārthaṃ sa mantro bahulīkṛtaḥ ||
tato duryodhanenāpi grahaṇaṃ pāṇḍavasya tat ||
sainyasthāneṣu sarveṣu vyāghoṣitam ariṃdama ||
But when Drona promised -- with a proviso -- the capture of the king [Yudhishthira], your extremely foolish sons deemed him as good as taken already. For your son knows that Drona is well-disposed toward the Pandavas; therefore, to give the vow firmness, that plan was spread [everywhere]. And then Duryodhana proclaimed this capture of the Pandava [Yudhishthira] throughout all the encampments of the army, O tamer of foes.

The unwise sons of Dhritarashtra hear only the promise, skipping past the 'proviso' -- self-deception readily discards the condition, keeping only what it wishes to hear. Duryodhana, however, not trusting Drona, spreads the plan everywhere, so as to bind the teacher by public word: cunning tries to compel even an ally by making the vow public. Thus evil does not trust even its own, and insures itself through disclosure. The verse teaches that one who wishes to believe hears only what he wants, discarding the provisos; that a villain's distrust extends even to his own supporters; and that broadcasting a plan in order to bind the one who made the promise is a sign of an unclean foundation -- where there is no trust, one resorts to compelling by rumor.
