तद् अद्भुतम् अपश्याम भगदत्तस्य संयुगे ॥
तथा वृद्धस्य चरितं कुञ्जरेण विशां पते ॥
ततो राजा दशार्णानां प्राग्ज्योतिषम् उपाद्रवत् ॥
तिर्यग्यातेन नागेन समदेनाशुगामिना ॥
तयोर् युद्धं समभवन् नागयोर् भीमरूपयोः ॥
सपक्षयोः पर्वतयोर् यथा सद्रुमयोः पुरा ॥
tad adbhutam apaśyāma bhagadattasya saṃyuge ||
tathā vṛddhasya caritaṃ kuñjareṇa viśāṃ pate ||
tato rājā daśārṇānāṃ prāgjyotiṣam upādravat ||
tiryagyātena nāgena samadenāśugāminā ||
tayor yuddhaṃ samabhavan nāgayor bhīmarūpayoḥ ||
sapakṣayoḥ parvatayor yathā sadrumayoḥ purā ||
We beheld that marvel, the feat of aged Bhagadatta on his elephant in battle, O sovereign. Then the king of the Dasharnas charged at Bhagadatta with an elephant moving crosswise, maddened by must, swift. Between those two, elephants terrible in appearance, a battle broke out -- just as between winged, wooded mountains of old.

Twice the narrative marvels at the feat of "aged" Bhagadatta -- his age is stressed for a reason: it makes his might all the more astonishing. And the clash of the two elephants is likened to a battle of the winged mountains of old -- those that, by legend, once flew, until Indra clipped their wings. It is telling that for this elephant fight the narrative chooses an image from the very beginning, before the world took its present shape. The verse teaches that valor undimmed by advanced years is a marvel apart, for it overcomes the very frailty of age; that some old men, in their hour, display a strength that shames the young; and that by likening the elephants to winged mountains, the narrative once more raises the earthly to the primordial, recalling a time when even mountains were alive and terrible -- so that this present battle partakes of that ancient, titanic measure.
