प्रियकामो जयाकाङ्क्षी कृतवान् इदम् अप्रियम् ॥
न लुब्धो बुध्यते दोषान् मोहाल् लोभः प्रवर्तते ॥
मधु लिप्सुर् हि नापश्यं प्रपातम् इदम् ईदृशम् ॥

Traducción
"I alone, wishing well for Subhadra, Keshava, and Arjuna, craving victory, wrought this calamity. The covetous do not perceive their faults — from confusion avarice is born; for, lusting after honey, I did not perceive such an abyss."

Yudhishthira passes sentence on himself by the law of inner downfall: "mohāt lobhaḥ pravartate" — from delusion greed arises, and greed blinds one to danger. The image "madhu lipsuḥ… prapātam na apaśyam", "lusting after honey, I did not perceive the abyss", is the ancient likeness of desire that leads to the edge of a precipice. It is telling that even a good wish — "priyakāmaḥ", the good of those dear to him — turned out to be mixed with "jayākāṅkṣī", the craving for victory, and so it blinded him. The verse teaches that even a worthy goal, touched by self-interest, loses its sight; it is not wickedness but an unnoticed trace of greed within the good that destroys discernment.
