अपरे दन्तवेष्टेषु कुम्भेषु च कटेषु च ॥
शरैः समर्पिता नागाः क्रौञ्चवद् व्यनदन् मुहुः ॥
गजस्कन्धगतानां च पुरुषाणां किरीटिना ॥
आच्छिद्यन्तोत्तमाङ्गानि भल्लैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥

Traducción
Some elephants, pierced by arrows in the gums, the frontal bosses, and the temples, trumpeted again and again, like krauncha birds. And the heads of the men sitting on the elephants' backs were severed by the Diademed One with bhalla arrows of smooth joints.

A sorrowful sound: «krauñcavat vyanadan», 'they trumpeted like krauncha birds [cranes]' — the roar of the wounded elephants is likened to a bird's lament. The poem itself mourns even the animals drawn into a strife not their own. It is telling that in this slaughter even the speechless creatures, caught up in another's enmity, suffer. The verse teaches compassion for every creature perishing in war: the elephants bear no guilt in the quarrel of men, yet pay for it with a cry of lamentation; and whoever hears this bird-like moan within the roar of battle will not glorify war, but will long for peace for all beings.
