तत्र चक्रैर् विमथितैर् भग्नैश् च परमायुधैः ॥
अक्षैश् च बहुधा भग्नैर् ईषादण्डकबन्धुरैः ॥
कूबरैर् मथितैश् चापि ध्वजैश् चापि निपातितैः ॥
वर्मभिश् चामरैश् चैव व्यवकीर्णा वसुंधरा ॥
स्रग्भिर् आभरणैर् वस्त्रैर् अनुकर्षैश् च मारिष ॥
संछन्ना वसुधा तत्र द्यौर् ग्रहैर् इव भारत ॥
tatra cakrair vimathitair bhagnaiś ca paramāyudhaiḥ ||
akṣaiś ca bahudhā bhagnair īṣādaṇḍakabandhuraiḥ ||
kūbarair mathitaiś cāpi dhvajaiś cāpi nipātitaiḥ ||
varmabhiś cāmaraiś caiva vyavakīrṇā vasuṃdharā ||
sragbhir ābharaṇair vastrair anukarṣaiś ca māriṣa ||
saṃchannā vasudhā tatra dyaur grahair iva bhārata ||
"There, with shattered wheels and broken finest weapons, with axles broken in many places, with poles, shafts, and chariot-bodies, with crushed yoke-poles, and with fallen banners, armor, and fly-whisks, the earth is strewn. With garlands, ornaments, garments, and axle-supports, O worthy one, the ground there is covered, as heaven is covered with stars, O Bharata."

The earth, strewn with wreckage and finery, is likened to "dyauḥ grahaiḥ iva", heaven with its stars: devastation clothed in deceptive beauty. It is telling that the epic dresses ruin in a celestial image. The verse teaches that war turns the splendor of life into a field strewn with wreckage, and the lovely simile only sharpens the horror: what shines like a starry sky is in truth a heap of the broken — a bitter rebuke to discord.
