यद्य् अदास्यम् अनुज्ञां वै पूर्वम् एव गृहान् प्रति ॥
सिन्धुराजस्य समरे नाभविष्यज् जनक्षयः ॥
जयद्रथो जीवितार्थी गच्छमानो गृहान् प्रति ॥
मयानार्येण संरुद्धो द्रोणात् प्राप्याभयं रणे ॥
अद्य मे भ्रातरः क्षीणाश् चित्रसेनादयो युधि ॥
भीमसेनं समासाद्य पश्यतां नो दुरात्मनाम् ॥
yady adāsyam anujñāṃ vai pūrvam eva gṛhān prati ||
sindhurājasya samare nābhaviṣyaj janakṣayaḥ ||
jayadratho jīvitārthī gacchamāno gṛhān prati ||
mayānāryeṇa saṃruddho droṇāt prāpyābhayaṃ raṇe ||
adya me bhrātaraḥ kṣīṇāś citrasenādayo yudhi ||
bhīmasenaṃ samāsādya paśyatāṃ no durātmanām ||
'If only I had given permission, even earlier, for the king of Sindhu to depart for home in battle, there would not have been this slaughter of people. Jayadratha, wishing to live, departing for home, was held back by me, ignoble one, having obtained from Drona safety in battle. Now my brothers, Chitrasena and the others, have perished in battle, having clashed with Bhimasena, before the eyes of us, the evil-souled.'

Among the accusations against Drona, a self-reproach breaks through: 'I, ignoble one, held back Jayadratha, who wished to leave.' It is telling that Duryodhana sees this: had he stopped his brother in time, there would have been no slaughter. The verse teaches that stubbornness, refusing to let one who wished to escape depart, destroys many; and one who out of pride held a kinsman on a fatal path shares the guilt for his death and for the deaths of all who fell for his sake.
