[Dhritarashtra:] "When that unassailable, boundlessly mighty one [Drona] entered among the Srinjayas, indignant, inflamed — what was your mood then? Having spoken to Duryodhana, my son who transgressed the shastras, when he entered, immeasurable in spirit — what did Partha undertake? When the hero Saindhava and Bhurishravas were slain, when the greatly resplendent, unvanquished one rushed against the Panchalas — what was on their minds? And who followed that hero-benefactor, best of the brahmanas, and who walked behind him, heroes alongside the brave one who fought there?"

The blind king again eagerly questions about Drona — but behind the questions already lurks a foreboding of the teacher's end. It is telling that he calls him "varadam dvijasattamam" — benefactor, best of the brahmanas: the king honors the teacher even in his anxiety. The verse teaches that anxiety for a loved one sharpens attention to every detail; and one who dreads loss catches every word of news about the one he fears to lose.
