एवम् उक्तास् तु ते सर्वे शस्त्रवृष्टिम् अपातयन् ॥
द्रौणिं प्रति महाराज जलं जलधरा इव ॥
तान् निहत्य शरान् द्रौणिर् दश वीरान् अपोथयत् ॥
प्रमुखे पाण्डुपुत्राणां धृष्टद्युम्नस्य चाभिभो ॥
ते हन्यमानाः समरे पाञ्चालाः सृञ्जयास् तथा ॥
परित्यज्य रणे द्रौणिं व्यद्रवन्त दिशो दश ॥
तान् दृष्ट्वा द्रवतः शूरान् पाञ्चालान् सहसोमकान् ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नो महाराज द्रौणिम् अभ्यद्रवद् युधि ॥
evam uktās tu te sarve śastravṛṣṭim apātayan ||
drauṇiṃ prati mahārāja jalaṃ jaladharā iva ||
tān nihatya śarān drauṇir daśa vīrān apothayat ||
pramukhe pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ dhṛṣṭadyumnasya cābhibho ||
te hanyamānāḥ samare pāñcālāḥ sṛñjayās tathā ||
parityajya raṇe drauṇiṃ vyadravanta diśo daśa ||
tān dṛṣṭvā dravataḥ śūrān pāñcālān sahasomakān ||
dhṛṣṭadyumno mahārāja drauṇim abhyadravad yudhi ||
Thus instructed, they all let fall a rain of weapons upon Drauni, O great king, like clouds pouring water. Having destroyed those arrows, Drauni crushed ten heroes before the eyes of the sons of Pandu and of Dhrishtadyumna, O lord. Being destroyed in battle, the Panchalas and Srinjayas, leaving Drauni in the battle, scattered in all directions. Having seen those heroes, the Panchalas with the Somakas, fleeing, Dhrishtadyumna, O great king, rushed upon Drauni in the battle.

Seeing his own men flee, Dhrishtadyumna himself charges at Ashvatthama: a leader goes where the rest retreat. It is telling that these two are the future slayer and slain — though in the reverse order from Dhrishtadyumna's vow — for fate brings them together before their appointed hour. The verse teaches that a true leader stands where others have faltered; and the meeting of those whose fates are entwined begins long before the final reckoning.
