संजय उवाच
द्रोणस्य मतम् आज्ञाय योद्धुकामस्य तां निशाम् ॥
दुर्योधनो महाराज वश्यान् भ्रातॄन् अभाषत ॥
विकर्णं चित्रसेनं च महाबाहुं च कौरवम् ॥
दुर्धर्षं दीर्घबाहुं च ये च तेषां पदानुगाः ॥
द्रोणं यत्ताः पराक्रान्ताः सर्वे रक्षत पृष्ठतः ॥
हार्दिक्यो दक्षिणं चक्रं शल्यश् चैवोत्तरं तथा ॥
त्रिगर्तानां च ये शूरा हतशिष्टा महारथाः ॥
तांश् चैव सर्वान् पुत्रस् ते समचोदयद् अग्रतः ॥

duryodhano mahārāja vaśyān bhrātṝn abhāṣata ||
vikarṇaṃ citrasenaṃ ca mahābāhuṃ ca kauravam ||
durdharṣaṃ dīrghabāhuṃ ca ye ca teṣāṃ padānugāḥ ||
droṇaṃ yattāḥ parākrāntāḥ sarve rakṣata pṛṣṭhataḥ ||
hārdikyo dakṣiṇaṃ cakraṃ śalyaś caivottaraṃ tathā ||
trigartānāṃ ca ye śūrā hataśiṣṭā mahārathāḥ ||
tāṃś caiva sarvān putras te samacodayad agrataḥ ||
Having learned Drona's intent, wishing to fight that night, Duryodhana, O great king, addressed his obedient brothers — Vikarna and Chitrasena, and the mighty-armed Kaurava, Durdharsha and Dirghabahu, and those who were their followers: 'Guard Drona from behind, all of you, alert and valiant; Hardikya — the right wheel, and Shalya — the left.' And those brave great warriors of the Trigartas who had survived the slaughter — all of them your son sent forth in front.

Duryodhana builds his defense around the teacher: brothers behind, allies at the wheels, Trigartas in front. It is telling that the whole plan revolves around preserving one man: the hope of the whole camp rests on Drona. The verse teaches that an army that has lost faith in its own strength transfers all its hope to a single person, and thereby betrays its own weakness; for where victory is made to depend on one life, defeat is already knocking at the gate.
