एषा विदीर्यते राजन् बहुधा भारती चमूः ॥
विप्रकीर्णान्य् अनीकानि नावतिष्ठन्ति कर्हि चित् ॥
वातेनेव समुद्धूतम् अभ्रजालं विदीर्यते ॥
सव्यसाचिनम् आसाद्य भिन्ना नौर् इव सागरे ॥
द्रवतां योधमुख्यानां गाण्डीवप्रेषितैः शरैः ॥
विद्धानां शतशो राजञ् श्रूयते निनदो महान् ॥
निशीथे राजशार्दूल स्तनयित्नोर् इवाम्बरे ॥
हाहाकाररवांश् चैव सिंहनादांश् च पुष्कलान् ॥
शृणु शब्दान् बहुविधान् अर्जुनस्य रथं प्रति ॥

śṛṇu śabdān bahuvidhān arjunasya rathaṃ prati ||
"Behold, O king, the Bharata army splits apart into pieces; the scattered troops hold nowhere. Like a cloud-mass swept up by a whirlwind and torn asunder, having run into Savyasachin [Arjuna], like a shattered ship at sea. Of the fleeing chief warriors, pierced by the hundreds with arrows sent by the Gandiva, O king, a great wail is heard at midnight, O tiger among kings, as of thunder in the sky. And cries of 'alas,' and abundant lion-roars [are heard]."

The army crumbles before Arjuna "like clouds before a whirlwind, like a ship shattered at sea": one lone hero turns a whole host to dust. It is telling that Karna paints this in images of elemental forces — wind, sea, thunder: to him, Arjuna is a force of nature, not a man. The verse teaches that there is a valor exceeding all proportion of strength; before such superiority, numbers are powerless, as clouds before a storm — a lesson on the limits of multitude where true greatness arises.
