दीप्यमाना महोल्केव तिष्ठत्य् अस्य हि वासवी ॥
त्वदर्थं हि महाबाहो रौद्ररूपं बिभर्ति च ॥
घटोत्कचस् तु राधेयं प्रत्युद्यातु महाबलः ॥
स हि भीमेन बलिना जातः सुरपराक्रमः ॥
तस्मिन्न् अस्त्राणि दिव्यानि राक्षसान्य् आसुराणि च ॥
सततं चानुरक्तो वो हितैषी च घटोत्कचः ॥
विजेष्यति रणे कर्णम् इति मे नात्र संशयः ॥
dīpyamānā maholkeva tiṣṭhaty asya hi vāsavī ||
tvadarthaṃ hi mahābāho raudrarūpaṃ bibharti ca ||
ghaṭotkacas tu rādheyaṃ pratyudyātu mahābalaḥ ||
sa hi bhīmena balinā jātaḥ suraparākramaḥ ||
tasminn astrāṇi divyāni rākṣasāny āsurāṇi ca ||
satataṃ cānurakto vo hitaiṣī ca ghaṭotkacaḥ ||
vijeṣyati raṇe karṇam iti me nātra saṃśayaḥ ||
"Blazing, like a great meteor, the Vasavi dart of Indra rests with him; for your sake, o mighty-armed one, it bears a dread form. But let Ghatotkacha, the mighty one, go to meet Radheya: for indeed he was begotten by mighty Bhima, with godlike prowess. In him are divine weapons, of rakshasas and of asuras; and ever devoted to you and a well-wisher is Ghatotkacha. He will conquer Karna in battle — of this I have no doubt."

Krishna reveals the true reason: Karna is holding Indra's dart in reserve for Arjuna, and so the encounter must be averted. It is telling that in Arjuna's place he sends Ghatotkacha instead — knowing, as only Krishna can know, that the rakshasa will force Karna to spend that irrevocable weapon. The verse teaches that the highest strategy sacrifices the lesser to save what matters most; and one who discerns the hidden workings of events arrays his forces so that the death of one turns aside a fatal blow from another.
