At this very moment, O king, the mighty son of Jatasura, approaching Duryodhana, spoke, best of strikers: "Duryodhana, your foes, renowned, furious in battle, the Pandavas I wish to slay by your command, with their companions. Jatasura -- my father -- the chief of rakshasas of old; having applied the rakshasa-slaying deed against him, he was felled by the contemptible Parthas. For him I desire vengeance, sent by you to go, O lord." To him then the king spoke, rejoicing again and again.

The son of Jatasura thirsts for vengeance for his father, who fell at the hands of the Pandavas: blood feud stretches from generation to generation, breeding new deaths. It is telling that the war of Kurukshetra draws in even distant, old scores belonging to others. The verse teaches that vengeance does not fade with the avenger's death but passes to descendants, growing without end; and a feud fed by the thirst for revenge is a bottomless whirlpool, drawing ever more lives into the cycle of blood for blood.
