"And she, fallen to the ground, O Partha, was slain with her sons and kin by that mace and by the weapon Sthunakarna, [that] rakshasi. Deprived of the mace, Jarasandha, in the great battle, was slain by Bhimasena before your eyes, O Dhananjaya. For had Jarasandha, the mighty, been mace in hand, neither the gods with Indra could have prevailed to slay him in battle, O best of men. For it was for your benefit that the son of Nishada [Ekalavya] was deprived of his thumb by Drona, who made himself his teacher, by deceit — [though Ekalavya] was truly valorous."

Ekalavya, who surpassed Drona's own pupils through his training, was deprived of his thumb under the guise of a teacher's fee: valor disarmed by cunning. It is significant that here too the removal of a formidable figure was accomplished by stratagem, not in open battle. This verse teaches that the path of providence is winding and not always clean in appearance; but behind these stratagems lies care for what is to come, and what looks like injustice to one turns out, in its appointed hour, to be salvation for many.
