मया न निहतः पूर्वम् एष युष्मत्प्रियेप्सया ॥
एष हि ब्राह्मणद्वेषी यज्ञद्वेषी च राक्षसः ॥
धर्मस्य लोप्ता पापात्मा तस्माद् एष निपातितः ॥
व्यंसिता चाप्य् उपायेन शक्रदत्ता मयानघ ॥
ये हि धर्मस्य लोप्तारो वध्यास् ते मम पाण्डव ॥
धर्मसंस्थापनार्थं हि प्रतिज्ञैषा ममाव्यया ॥
ब्रह्म सत्यं दमः शौचं धर्मो ह्रीः श्रीर् धृतिः क्षमा ॥
यत्र तत्र रमे नित्यम् अहं सत्येन ते शपे ॥
mayā na nihataḥ pūrvam eṣa yuṣmatpriyepsayā ||
eṣa hi brāhmaṇadveṣī yajñadveṣī ca rākṣasaḥ ||
dharmasya loptā pāpātmā tasmād eṣa nipātitaḥ ||
vyaṃsitā cāpy upāyena śakradattā mayānagha ||
ye hi dharmasya loptāro vadhyās te mama pāṇḍava ||
dharmasaṃsthāpanārthaṃ hi pratijñaiṣā mamāvyayā ||
brahma satyaṃ damaḥ śaucaṃ dharmo hrīḥ śrīr dhṛtiḥ kṣamā ||
yatra tatra rame nityam ahaṃ satyena te śape ||
"...he would have been slain by me, the son of Bhimasena, Ghatotkacha. He was not slain by me before, out of desire to please you; for this one is a hater of brahmins and a hater of sacrifice, a rakshasa, a violator of dharma, a sinful soul — therefore he was struck down. And [the spear], the gift of Shakra, was spent by stratagem, by me, O sinless one. For whoever are violators of dharma deserve death from me, O Pandava; for it is for the establishment of dharma that this, my unwavering vow, stands. Brahman, truth, self-control, purity, dharma, modesty, glory, firmness, forbearance [— wherever these dwell, there I am]."

Krishna declares the essence of his descent: violators of dharma deserve destruction, for his unwavering vow is the establishment of dharma. It is significant that he then names the virtues — truth, purity, forbearance — where he himself dwells. This verse teaches that the Lord is not bound to persons but to dharma: he is present wherever truth and purity are, and against those who trample them; and behind every turn of the war stands a single law — the restoration of the world's violated order.
