संजय उवाच
प्रादुर्भूते ततस् तस्मिन्न् अस्त्रे नारायणे तदा ॥
प्रावात् सपृषतो वायुर् अनभ्रे स्तनयित्नुमान् ॥
चचाल पृथिवी चापि चुक्षुभे च महोदधिः ॥
प्रतिस्रोतः प्रवृत्ताश् च गन्तुं तत्र समुद्रगाः ॥
शिखराणि व्यदीर्यन्त गिरीणां तत्र भारत ॥
अपसव्यं मृगाश् चैव पाण्डुपुत्रान् प्रचक्रिरे ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
prādurbhūte tatas tasminn astre nārāyaṇe tadā ||
prāvāt sapṛṣato vāyur anabhre stanayitnumān ||
cacāla pṛthivī cāpi cukṣubhe ca mahodadhiḥ ||
pratisrotaḥ pravṛttāś ca gantuṃ tatra samudragāḥ ||
śikharāṇi vyadīryanta girīṇāṃ tatra bhārata ||
apasavyaṃ mṛgāś caiva pāṇḍuputrān pracakrire ||
When that Narayana weapon then appeared, a wind blew laden with watery dust, thunderous though the sky was cloudless. The earth shook, and the great ocean was churned; and the rivers rushing to the sea turned and flowed backward. The peaks of the mountains split apart there, O Bharata; and the animals circled the sons of Pandu keeping them to their left — an ill omen.

The appearance of the weapon shakes the order of the world: rivers run backward, mountains crack, animals circle the Pandavas on the inauspicious side. It is significant that nature itself rises up against the very use of such power — creation revolts when its laws are trampled. The verse teaches that there are deeds contrary to the fabric of the world, and they echo in it as a shudder; and the dread omens here are not decoration but the voice of creation itself, warning of the lawlessness of an oncoming, overwhelming force.
