सौहार्दं सर्वभूतेषु यः करोत्य् अतिमात्रशः ॥
सो ऽद्य केशग्रहं श्रुत्वा पितुर् धक्ष्यति नो रणे ॥
विक्रोशमाने हि मयि भृशम् आचार्यगृद्धिनि ॥
अवकीर्य स्वधर्मं हि शिष्येण निहतो गुरुः ॥
यदा गतं वयो भूयः शिष्टम् अल्पतरं च नः ॥
तस्येदानीं विकारो ऽयम् अधर्मो यत्कृतो महान् ॥
sauhārdaṃ sarvabhūteṣu yaḥ karoty atimātraśaḥ ||
so 'dya keśagrahaṃ śrutvā pitur dhakṣyati no raṇe ||
vikrośamāne hi mayi bhṛśam ācāryagṛddhini ||
avakīrya svadharmaṃ hi śiṣyeṇa nihato guruḥ ||
yadā gataṃ vayo bhūyaḥ śiṣṭam alpataraṃ ca naḥ ||
tasyedānīṃ vikāro 'yam adharmo yatkṛto mahān ||
"'He who shows friendliness to all beings beyond measure -- he, on hearing now how his father was seized by the hair, will burn us up in battle. Though I cried out loudly, fervently longing to save the Acharya, the teacher, trampling his own dharma, was slain by his disciple. Now that the greater part of life has already passed and less remains to us, this is our own corruption, the great lawlessness that has been committed.'"

Arjuna grieves that a great lawlessness has been committed in his declining years, when little life remains. The lament over time is telling: the stain of adharma will fall over the remaining days and over memory itself. The verse teaches that the cost of an evil deed lies not only in its consequences but in how it dishonors the whole path already walked; one who commits evil near the end of life mourns most bitterly not a single moment stained, but the sum of everything lived.
