तद् अद्भुतम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य द्वारकावासिनो जनाः ॥
तूर्णात् तूर्णतरं जग्मुर् अहो दैवम् इति ब्रुवन् ॥
काननेषु च रम्येषु पर्वतेषु नदीषु च ॥
निवसन्न् आनयाम् आस वृष्णिदारान् धनंजयः ॥
स पञ्चनदम् आसाद्य धीमान् अतिसमृद्धिमत् ॥
देशे गोपशुधान्याढ्ये निवासम् अकरोत् प्रभुः ॥
ततो लोभः समभवद् दस्यूनां निहतेश्वराः ॥
दृष्ट्वा स्त्रियो नीयमानाः पार्थेनैकेन भारत ॥
ततस् ते पापकर्माणो लोभोपहतचेतसः ॥
आभीरा मन्त्रयाम् आसुः समेत्याशुभदर्शनाः ॥
tad adbhutam abhiprekṣya dvārakāvāsino janāḥ ||
tūrṇāt tūrṇataraṃ jagmur aho daivam iti bruvan ||
kānaneṣu ca ramyeṣu parvateṣu nadīṣu ca ||
nivasann ānayām āsa vṛṣṇidārān dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
sa pañcanadam āsādya dhīmān atisamṛddhimat ||
deśe gopaśudhānyāḍhye nivāsam akarot prabhuḥ ||
tato lobhaḥ samabhavad dasyūnāṃ nihateśvarāḥ ||
dṛṣṭvā striyo nīyamānāḥ pārthenaikena bhārata ||
tatas te pāpakarmāṇo lobhopahatacetasaḥ ||
ābhīrā mantrayām āsuḥ sametyāśubhadarśanāḥ ||
Beholding that marvel, the inhabitants of Dwaraka departed swifter than swift, crying 'Alas, fate!' And along the way, evil-minded men known as Abhiras began to plot against Dhananjaya.

No sooner had the city's protection weakened than the covetous Abhiras began scheming without scruple. Their conduct against the backdrop of universal mourning is all the more striking: while the people lament the loss of Krishna, those base in spirit see only an opportunity for plunder.
