सर्वे वेदा यत् पदम् आमनन्ति तपांसि सर्वाणि च यद् वदन्ति ।
यद् इच्छन्तो ब्रह्मचर्यं चरन्ति तत् ते पदं संग्रहेण ब्रवीमि ॥

The answer begins at the point where everything sacred converges. sarve vedā yat padam āmananti — "that word (pada — both 'word' and 'step' and 'abode') which all the Vedas proclaim with one accord"; tapāṁsi sarvāṇi — all austerities; brahmacaryam — the continence of a student: three streams of tradition — knowledge, austerity, discipline — flow toward one thing. saṁgraheṇa bravīmi — "I shall tell it in brief": om ity etat — "it is Oṁ".
To answer a question about the transcendent with a syllable is no evasion. oṁ is no conventional sign but the sonic body of the Absolute: a name in which the Named is present. The Vedas open and close with it; every mantra breathes by it. Where the object surpasses all descriptions (verse 43 cast aside every category), what remains is to indicate not by description but by a name — and in the name to give the Bearer himself.
For the path of devotion this verse is a cornerstone: the Highest is accessible through sound, through a name received from a teacher's lips. What reasoning cannot ascend to (verse 38) descends of itself — in a word. Oṁ here is a door; the Gītā (8.13) shows that door in action: oṁ ity ekākṣaraṁ brahma vyāharan mām anusmaran — "uttering the one-syllabled Oṁ, remembering Me, he who departs attains the supreme way". The syllable — and He of whom the syllable speaks: the name and the Named are inseparable.
