Fire, becoming speech, entered the mouth. Wind, becoming breath, entered the nostrils. The Sun, becoming sight, entered the eyes. The Quarters, becoming hearing, entered the ears. Herbs and trees, becoming hairs, entered the skin. The Moon, becoming mind, entered the heart. Death, becoming apāna, entered the navel. The Waters, becoming seed, entered the generative organ.

The great entering — eight entrances that mirror the eight exits of the fourth verse: what went forth from the First Man as a god returns into man as a faculty: Agni as speech into the mouth, Vāyu as breath into the nostrils, the Sun as sight into the eyes, the Quarters as hearing into the ears, plants as hairs into the skin, the Moon as mind into the heart, Death as apāna into the navel, the Waters as seed into the loins.
The formula bhūtvā — "having become" — is the key: the gods did not settle in the body as lodgers — they became its faculties: your speech is Agni himself in the form of speech; your gaze is the Sun consenting to be sight. Every act of perception and of speech is the service of a deity within you; the body is a working temple in which eight gods keep an unbroken liturgy (the Praśna: "in this city the fires of the prāṇas keep watch").
Hence the whole ethics of the body: to defile speech is to insult Agni; to muddy the mind, the Moon; to squander seed, the Waters. And hence its dignity too: man is not "moulded out of dirt" — he is assembled out of consenting gods. Note also the humble note: Death too entered — as apāna: she labours in us all our life long, letting go of what is spent; her entrance too is a service, and when she performs the last letting-go, that will be her work in the temple, not a burglary.
