अनाद्यनन्तं कलिलस्य मध्ये विश्वस्य स्रष्टारम् अनेकरूपं ।
विश्वस्यैकं परिवेष्टितारं ज्ञात्वा देवं मुच्यते सर्वपाशैः

The beginningless and endless One, in the midst of the tangle, Creator of the universe, of many forms, the one who encompasses all — knowing God, one is freed from all bonds.

The mantra repeats 4.14 and 4.16 almost word for word, but replaces the first word: there it was "finer than the fine", here "beginningless and endless". After the talk of births and forms of which our life consists, the replacement is apt: with us everything begins and ends, with Him neither.
Repetition in śruti is a device, not carelessness. One and the same formula is set at the end of every examination, like a seal beneath a document: whatever the subject — māyā, the world's confusion, the measure of the soul and its rebirths — the conclusion is one and the same.
Especially apt here is the phrase kalilasya madhye, "in the midst of the tangle". Just now there were listed will, touch, beguilement, food, rain, the succession of forms — that is, the whole disorder of our existence. And it is said: He is in the midst of it.
The closing line sounds in the Upaniṣad for the fourth time — 1.8, 2.15, 4.16 and here: "knowing God, one is freed from all bonds". The fifth adhyāya, which began by distinguishing knowledge and ignorance and Him who is above both, ends with the same thing: freedom lies not in a change of states but in the recognition of a Person.
