Ākāśa — space, the ether: the subtlest of the five elements and the one out of which, by the Taittirīya, the other four unfold.
“From this Ātman arose space, from space the wind, from the wind fire, from fire the waters, from the waters the earth.”
Note that the litany goes in the reverse order: it named the earth in the sixteenth section, the waters in the eighteenth, the heat in the nineteenth — and only now space.
From the gross to the subtle. So one also ascends in contemplation.
The property of ākāśa is to contain and not to hinder. It does not press and does not resist; everything fits in it, and it mixes with nothing.
Hence it is constantly taken as the likeness of the Ātman. The Chāndogya says: “that space which is within the heart — in it are contained both heaven and earth”.
The next section will name the world entire, and then come the pairs of opposites.
