Satya — “truth, the real”; a word from the root as, “to be”, and it means not so much the correctness of a statement as the genuineness of being.
In the first section Rudra already said: satyo 'ham — “I am the true”. And there too: “truth I satiate with truth”.
The Chāndogya analyses this word by syllables: sa-ti-yam, where “sa” and “yam” are the immortal, and “ti” in the middle is the mortal.
In the very word “truth”, that is, is contained this: the mortal is enclosed by the immortal.
Note how this whole book ends: its forty-fifth section will thrice repeat oṃ satyam — “Om, the truth”. With the same two words the Rāma-tāpanī ends as well.
The word, then, is set here neither by chance nor as one of many: it will return as the seal.
