Three words in a row, worth distinguishing: ādeśa, upadeśa, dharma. Ādeśa means «direction, command»: from ā-diś, «to point at»; it is the word of an order. Upadeśa — «instruction», literally «pointing from nearby», discussed when reading the sixteenth line of this chapter. Dharma — «law, code, that which upholds».
The three words describe the same thing from three sides: as command, as that which was taught, and as statute. Worth noting that none of them speaks of consent. It is not said: this is what you yourself will want; it is said: it is commanded, it is taught, it is laid down.
The Vaishnava side draws a distinction here and makes the distinction foundational. It has vidhi, «rule», and it has rāga, «inclination»; and service by rule, vaidhi, is recognized as valid but lower relative to service by inclination, rāga-anugā. The order runs: first by rule, then by inclination; and the first is a preparation for the second, not a substitute for it.
This distinction, to my mind, explains too why such books contain so many threats. Where everything rests on rule, it must be reinforced with fear; where inclination has arisen, there is nothing left to reinforce — it holds on its own.
