Worth noting is the word asharira, "bodiless," for it is used here in a special sense. It is not said the body has vanished: it is said he does not consider it his own; and hence bodilessness is not the absence of the body, but the absence of appropriation. This definition is, in my view, more precise than the ordinary one, and deserves holding onto.
A person whose leg has been amputated has not become bodiless; but a person who has stopped saying "I am ill" when the body is ill has become so — though the body remains with him. Let us add what deserves saying of the phrase neti neti rupatvat, "by the form of 'not this, not this'." Of the device neti neti, discussed when reading the Mahavakya (p7), and the main point was said there: it cuts away identification, not existence.
Let us repeat the conclusion, for it is confirmed by the book itself: it is not said "there is no body," but "does not consider it his own." Let us add what the Vaishnava side supplies, which makes bodilessness acceptable. Having stopped considering the body his own, a person is not left with nothing: he gives it away. And its formula of surrender, discussed when reading the Jabala-darshana (7.11), reads: "body, home, sons, wealth — all this is Yours."
The difference between "not mine" and "Yours" is examined when reading verse forty-three; and here it fits, for the verse ends in denial, while surrender begins where denial ends.
