The triad of locks is named: root, belly, and throat; of the first two, discussed when reading verses seven and thirty-eight, the third is jalandhara-bandha, pressing the chin to the chest. Worth noting is the word samputa, "the folded," from sam-put, "to fold together": so are called two halves joined — a shell, a casket, folded palms. The image is good: the body, under the three locks, is likened to a closed vessel, in which something is held.
Let us add the last word of the verse: abhyasa-yogatah, "by the yoga of practice." The word abhyasa is central in this literature and means repetition until habit forms. The Gita speaks of it in a well-known passage: Arjuna complains the mind is uncontrollable, like the wind, and Krishna answers abhyasena tu kaunteya vairagyena cha grihyate, "by practice, O son of Kunti, and by dispassion, it is held" (6.35).
Worth noting is that two are named, not one: practice and dispassion. The Vaishnava side points to this and interprets it thus: practice without dispassion is labor wasted, for the mind, trained by day, wanders by night to where it finds sweetness. And conversely: dispassion without practice is an empty place, discussed when reading the fifth verse of this chapter.
Let us add its own understanding of the word: for it, abhyasa is repetition of the Name, and vairagya comes from it of itself; and hence the two means reduce to one.
