The evening programme at home

नम ओं विष्णु-पादाय कृष्ण-प्रेष्ठाय भू-तलेश्रीमते भक्तिवेदान्त-स्वामिन् इति नामिने

nama oṁ viṣṇu-pādāya kṛṣṇa-preṣṭhāya bhū-taleśrīmate bhaktivedānta-svāmin iti nāmine

Obeisance to him who has taken shelter at the feet of Viṣṇu, who is very dear to Kṛṣṇa on this earth — to the beautiful teacher named Bhaktivedānta Svāmī.

नमस् ते सारस्वते देवे गौर-वाणी-प्रचारिणेनिर्विशेष-शून्यवादि-पाश्चात्य-देश-तारिणे

namas te sārasvate deve gaura-vāṇī-pracāriṇenirviśeṣa-śūnyavādi-pāścātya-deśa-tāriṇe

Obeisance to you, O teacher, servant of Sarasvatī Gosvāmī! You preach the message of Gaurasundara and deliver the Western countries, filled with impersonalism and voidism.

किब जय जय गोराचाङ्देर् आरतिको शोभाजाह्नवी-तट-वने जग-मन-लोभा

kiba jaya jaya gorācāṅder āratiko śobhājāhnavī-taṭa-vane jaga-mana-lobhā

Oh, glory, glory to the beauty of Gauracandra's ārati! In the grove on the bank of the Jāhnavī it captivates the mind of the whole world.

दखिणे निताइचाङ्द् बामे गदाधरनिकटे अद्वैत श्रीनिवास छत्र-धर

dakhiṇe nitāicāṅd bāme gadādharanikaṭe advaita śrīnivāsa chatra-dhara

On His right is Nitāicāṅd, on His left Gadādhara, near by Advaita, and Śrīvāsa holds the umbrella.

बोसियाछे गोराचाङ्द् रत्न-सिंहासनेआरति कोरेन् ब्रह्मा-आदि देव-गणे

bosiyāche gorācāṅd ratna-siṁhāsaneārati koren brahmā-ādi deva-gaṇe

Gauracandra is seated on a jewelled throne, and Brahmā and all the hosts of gods perform His ārati.

नरहरि-आदि कोरिऽ चामर धुलायसञ्जय-मुकुन्द-वासु-घोष-आदि गाय

narahari-ādi kori' cāmara dhulāyasañjaya-mukunda-vāsu-ghoṣa-ādi gāya

Narahari and others fan Him with the cāmara; Sañjaya, Mukunda, Vāsu Ghoṣa and others sing.

शङ्ख बाजे घण्टा बाजे बाजे करतालमधुर मृदङ्ग बाजे परम रसाल

śaṅkha bāje ghaṇṭā bāje bāje karatālamadhura mṛdaṅga bāje parama rasāla

The conch sounds, the bell rings, the karatālas ring; the mṛdaṅga plays sweetly — to the height of rapture.

बहु-कोटि चन्द्र जिनिऽ वदन उज्ज्वलगल-देशे वन-माला कोरे झलमल

bahu-koṭi candra jini' vadana ujjvalagala-deśe vana-mālā kore jhalamala

His face shines brighter than many millions of moons; on His neck a garland of forest flowers glitters.

श्री-राधिका-श्यामसुन्दर एइ रूपे खेलभकतिविनोद देखे गोरार आरति-वेला

śrī-rādhikā-śyāmasundara ei rūpe khelabhakativinoda dekhe gorāra ārati-velā

Śrī Rādhikā and Śyāmasundara play, having taken this form; Bhaktivinoda beholds the hour of Gaura's ārati.

हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरेहरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरे

hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare harehare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare

O Harā, O Kṛṣṇa, O Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa, O Harā, Harā! O Harā, O Rāma, O Rāma, Rāma, O Harā, Harā!

नमस् ते नरसिंहाय प्रह्लादाह्लाद-दायिनेहिरण्यकशिपोर् वक्षः-शिला-टङ्क-नखालये

namas te narasiṁhāya prahlādāhlāda-dāyinehiraṇyakaśipor vakṣaḥ-śilā-ṭaṅka-nakhālaye

Obeisance to You, Nṛsiṁha, who give joy to Prahlāda! Your nails are the chisel, and the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu was the stone for them.

इतो नृसिंहः परतो नृसिंहोयतो यतो यामि ततो नृसिंहःबहिर् नृसिंहो हृदये नृसिंहोनृसिंहम् आदिं शरणं प्रपद्ये

ito nṛsiṁhaḥ parato nṛsiṁhoyato yato yāmi tato nṛsiṁhaḥbahir nṛsiṁho hṛdaye nṛsiṁhonṛsiṁham ādiṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye

Here is Nṛsiṁha and there is Nṛsiṁha; wherever I go, there is Nṛsiṁha. Outside is Nṛsiṁha and in the heart is Nṛsiṁha; I take refuge in Nṛsiṁha, the original shelter.

तव करकमलवरे नखं अद्भुतशृङ्गं दलितहिरण्यकशिपुतनुभृङ्गं ।केशव धृतनरहरिरूप जय जगदीश हरे

tava kara-kamala-vare nakhaṃ adbhuta-śṛṅgaṃ dalita-hiraṇyakaśipu-tanu-bhṛṅgaṃ |keśava dhṛta-nara-hari-rūpa jaya jagad-īśa hare

On the fine lotus of Your hand the nail is a wondrous horn that has torn apart the bee — the body of Hiraṇyakaśipu. O Keśava, who have taken the form of the man-lion, glory to You, lord of the world, O Hari!

वृन्दायै तुलसी-देव्यै प्रियायै केशवस्य चकृष्ण-भक्ति-प्रदे देवि सत्य-वत्यै नमो नमः

vṛndāyai tulasī-devyai priyāyai keśavasya cakṛṣṇa-bhakti-prade devi satya-vatyai namo namaḥ

Obeisance to Vṛndā, the goddess Tulasī, beloved of Keśava! O goddess who grants devotion to Kṛṣṇa, O Satyavatī, obeisance to you again and again.

नमो नमः तुलसी कृष्ण-प्रेयसि नमो नमःराधा-कृष्ण-सेवा पाबो एइ अबिलाषि

namo namaḥ tulasī kṛṣṇa-preyasi namo namaḥrādhā-kṛṣṇa-sevā pābo ei abilāṣi

Obeisance, obeisance to you, Tulasī, beloved of Kṛṣṇa! One thing I ask: may I attain the service of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.

जे तोमार शरण लोय्, तार वाञ्छा पूर्ण होय्कृपा कोरिऽ कोरो तारे वृन्दावन-वासी

je tomāra śaraṇa loy, tāra vāñchā pūrṇa hoykṛpā kori' koro tāre vṛndāvana-vāsī

Whoever takes shelter of you has his desire fulfilled completely. Be merciful — make me too a resident of Vṛndāvana.

मोर एइ अभिलाष, विलास कुञ्जे दिओ वासनयने हेरिबो सदा जुगल-रूप-राशि

mora ei abhilāṣa, vilāsa kuñje dio vāsanayane heribo sadā jugala-rūpa-rāśi

This is my desire: give me a dwelling in the grove of Their pastimes, so that my eyes may always behold the radiant beauty of the Divine Couple.

एइ निवेदन धर, सखीर अनुगत कोरोसेवा-अधिकार दिये कोरो निज दासी

ei nivedana dhara, sakhīra anugata korosevā-adhikāra diye koro nija dāsī

Accept this petition: make me a follower of the sakhīs, give me the right to serve and take me as your own maidservant.

दीन कृष्ण-दासे कोय्, एइ जेन मोर होय्श्री-राधा-गोविन्द-प्रेमे सदा जेन भासि

dīna kṛṣṇa-dāse koy, ei jena mora hoyśrī-rādhā-govinda-preme sadā jena bhāsi

So says the humble servant of Kṛṣṇa: let this become mine — and let me always float in the love of Śrī Rādhā and Govinda.

यानि कानि च पापानि ब्रह्म-हत्यादिकानि चतानि तानि विनश्यन्ति प्रदक्षिणः पदे पदे

yāni kāni ca pāpāni brahma-hatyādikāni catāni tāni vinaśyanti pradakṣiṇaḥ pade pade

Whatever sins there may be — even the killing of a brāhmaṇa and the like — all of them are destroyed step by step as one circumambulates Śrīmatī Tulasī-devī.

जय राधा-माधव जय कुञ्ज-विहारीजय गोपी-जन-वल्लभ जय गिरि-वर-धारीजय यशोदा-नन्दन जय ब्रज-जन-रञ्जनजय यामुन-तीर-वन-चारी

jaya rādhā-mādhava jaya kuñja-vihārījaya gopī-jana-vallabha jaya giri-vara-dhārījaya yaśodā-nandana jaya braja-jana-rañjanajaya yāmuna-tīra-vana-cārī

Glory to Mādhava, the Beloved of Rādhā; glory to Him who wanders in the groves. Glory to the darling of the cowherd girls; glory to the lifter of the great hill. Glory to the son of Yaśodā; glory to the delight of the people of Vraja; glory to Him who roams the forests on the Yamunā's bank.

ओं अज्ञान-तिमिरान्धस्य ज्ञानाञ्जन-शलाकयाचक्षुर् उन्मीलितं येन तस्मै श्री-गुरवे नमः

oṁ ajñāna-timirāndhasya jñānāñjana-śalākayācakṣur unmīlitaṁ yena tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ

I was blind in the darkness of ignorance, and my eyes have been opened with a stick smeared with the ointment of knowledge. Obeisance to that blessed guru.

श्री-चैतन्य-मनो-ऽभीष्टं स्थापितं येन भू-तलेस्वयं रूपः कदा मह्यं ददाति स्व-पदान्तिकम्

śrī-caitanya-mano-'bhīṣṭaṁ sthāpitaṁ yena bhū-talesvayaṁ rūpaḥ kadā mahyaṁ dadāti sva-padāntikam

When will Rūpa himself, who established on earth the cherished desire of Śrī Caitanya's heart, give me a place at his feet?

हे कृष्ण करुणा-सिन्धो दीन-बन्धो जगत्-पतेगोपेश गोपिका-कान्त राधा-कान्त नमो ऽस्तु ते

he kṛṣṇa karuṇā-sindho dīna-bandho jagat-pategopeśa gopikā-kānta rādhā-kānta namo 'stu te

O Kṛṣṇa, ocean of mercy, friend of the distressed, lord of the world; master of the cowherds, beloved of the gopīs, beloved of Rādhā — obeisance to You.

तप्त-काञ्चन-गौराङ्गि राधे वृन्दावनेश्वरिवृषभानु-सुते देवि प्रणमामि हरि-प्रिये

tapta-kāñcana-gaurāṅgi rādhe vṛndāvaneśvarivṛṣabhānu-sute devi praṇamāmi hari-priye

O You whose body is like molten gold, O Rādhā, queen of Vṛndāvana, daughter of Vṛṣabhānu, goddess, beloved of Hari — I bow to You.

हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरेहरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरे

hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare harehare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare

O Harā, O Kṛṣṇa, O Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa, O Harā, Harā! O Harā, O Rāma, O Rāma, Rāma, O Harā, Harā!

चेतो-दर्पण-मार्जनं भव-महा-दावाग्नि-निर्वापणंश्रेयः-कैरव-चन्द्रिका-वितरणं विद्या-वधू-जीवनम्आनन्दाम्बुधि-वर्धनं प्रति-पदं पूर्णामृतास्वादनंसर्वात्म-स्नपनं परं विजयते श्री-कृष्ण-सङ्कीर्तनम्

ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇaṁśreyaḥ-kairava-candrikā-vitaraṇaṁ vidyā-vadhū-jīvanamānandāmbudhi-vardhanaṁ prati-padaṁ pūrṇāmṛtāsvādanaṁsarvātma-snapanaṁ paraṁ vijayate śrī-kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtanam

May the congregational chanting of Kṛṣṇa's name be victorious! It cleans the mirror of the heart and puts out the great forest fire of material existence; it spreads moonlight on the white lily of good fortune and gives life to knowledge, as to a bride; it swells the ocean of bliss, at every step gives a taste of full nectar and bathes the whole self.

नाम्नाम् अकारि बहुधा निज-सर्व-शक्तिस्तत्रार्पिता नियमितः स्मरणे न कालःएतादृशी तव कृपा भगवन् ममापिदुर्दैवम् ईदृशम् इहाजनि नानुरागः

nāmnām akāri bahudhā nija-sarva-śaktistatrārpitā niyamitaḥ smaraṇe na kālaḥetādṛśī tava kṛpā bhagavan mamāpidurdaivam īdṛśam ihājani nānurāgaḥ

You have revealed many names and invested them with all Your power; and there is no fixed time for remembering them. Such is Your mercy, Lord — and such is my misfortune: no attraction to them has been born in me.

तृणाद् अपि सुनीचेन तरोर् अपि सहिष्णुनाअमानिना मानदेन कीर्तनीयः सदा हरिः

tṛṇād api sunīcena taror api sahiṣṇunāamāninā mānadena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ

By one who is lower than a blade of grass and more tolerant than a tree, who expects no honour for himself and honours everyone, Hari is to be chanted always.

न धनं न जनं न सुन्दरींकवितां वा जगद्-ईश कामयेमम जन्मनि जन्मनीश्वरेभवताद् भक्तिर् अहैतुकी त्वयि

na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁkavitāṁ vā jagad-īśa kāmayemama janmani janmanīśvarebhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi

Not wealth, not followers, not a beautiful woman nor a poet's fame do I desire, O Lord of the world. Birth after birth, let me have causeless devotion to You.

अयि नन्द-तनुज किङ्करंपतितं मां विषमे भवाम्बुधौकृपया तव पाद-पङ्कज-स्थित-धूली-सदृशं विचिन्तय

ayi nanda-tanuja kiṅkaraṁpatitaṁ māṁ viṣame bhavāmbudhaukṛpayā tava pāda-paṅkaja-sthita-dhūlī-sadṛśaṁ vicintaya

O son of Nanda, I am Your servant, fallen into the terrible ocean of material existence. Be merciful and consider me a speck of dust at Your lotus feet.

नयनं गलद्-अश्रु-धारयावदनं गद्गद-रुद्धया गिरापुलकैर् निचितं वपुः कदातव नाम-ग्रहणे भविष्यति

nayanaṁ galad-aśru-dhārayāvadanaṁ gadgada-ruddhayā girāpulakair nicitaṁ vapuḥ kadātava nāma-grahaṇe bhaviṣyati

When, as I utter Your name, will my eyes fill with streams of tears, my voice falter and my body be covered with thrills?

युगायितं निमेषेण चक्षुषा प्रावृषायितम्शून्यायितं जगत् सर्वं गोविन्द-विरहेण मे

yugāyitaṁ nimeṣeṇa cakṣuṣā prāvṛṣāyitamśūnyāyitaṁ jagat sarvaṁ govinda-viraheṇa me

A moment has become an age, my eyes a rainy season, and the whole world is empty: I am separated from Govinda.

आश्लिष्य वा पाद-रतां पिनष्टु माम्अदर्शनान् मर्म-हतां करोतु वायथा तथा वा विदधातु लम्पटोमत्-प्राण-नाथस् तु स एव नापरः

āśliṣya vā pāda-ratāṁ pinaṣṭu māmadarśanān marma-hatāṁ karotu vāyathā tathā vā vidadhātu lampaṭomat-prāṇa-nāthas tu sa eva nāparaḥ

Let Him embrace me, who clings to His feet, or trample me; let Him break my heart by not showing Himself. Let that libertine do as He pleases — He and no other is the lord of my life.
