ततो रजन्यां व्युष्टायां प्रभात उदिते रवौ ॥
कद्रूश् च विनता चैव भगिन्यौ ते तपोधन ॥
अमर्षिते सुसंरब्धे दास्ये कृतपणे तदा ॥
जग्मतुस् तुरगं द्रष्टुम् उच्छैःश्रवसम् अन्तिकात् ॥

Suta said: "Then, when the night had passed and at dawn the sun rose, the two sisters — Kadru and Vinata, O you rich in austerity — displeased and agitated, having staked slavery as their wager, flew close by to look at the horse Uchchaihshravas."

This brief opening leads toward the resolution of the wager. It is telling that the sisters are “displeased, agitated”: the passion of rivalry has robbed them of peace even before the dispute is settled. Scripture thus shows that ambition and competition poison the soul through mere anticipation, before any result. The dawn and the rising sun, against which they fly, are an image of the light of truth, before which the truth about the horse — and Kadru's deceit — is about to be revealed. Here is a reminder: agitation born of attachment to winning is a sign of forgetfulness of the eternal; peace belongs only to one who is free from the thirst to conquer and possess.
