Garuda's search for a place ‘without brahmins’ again underscores his concern for the inviolability of the holy: even in casting down an enormous branch, he takes care not to harm a single brahmin. Thus dharma is upheld in every detail. The grandeur of the images — a branch that a strap of a hundred hides could not gird, a flight of a hundred thousand yojanas in an instant, a mountain trembling from the wind of his wings — reveals the boundless might of Garuda, the bearer of the Lord. But this power is not self-willed: it moves ‘at his father's word,’ in obedience to its teacher. Here is the ideal: even the greatest strength must act in submission to dharma and to the guru. The devouring of the elephant and the tortoise brings to an end their age-old enmity — upon contact with the Lord's servant, the cursed brothers find their release. Thus scripture weaves together fearsome grandeur and a delicate care for dharma, showing that true might is always bound up with obedience and compassion.
