Suta said: “Then he soared up from the mountaintop, swift as thought, and dire omens, foreboding disaster, began among the gods. Indra's beloved thunderbolt blazed up as if in distress; a smoking, flaming meteor fell from the sky. And the weapons of the Vasus, the Rudras, the Adityas, the Sadhyas, the Maruts, and all the other hosts of gods attacked one another of their own accord. Nothing like it had ever happened before, even in the war of gods and asuras. Winds blew with crashing thunder, meteors fell on every side, and the cloudless sky roared with a mighty sound. The god of the gods [of the sky] himself then rained down blood; the garlands of the gods withered and their splendor dimmed; dreadful storm-clouds of ill omen poured down abundant blood, and dust, rising up, darkened their crowns. Then Indra, the wielder of a hundred sacrifices, overcome with dread together with the gods, seeing the dreadful omens, said to Brihaspati: ‘Why, lord, have these terrible, great omens arisen? Yet I see no enemy who could overpower us in battle.’ Brihaspati said: ‘By your fault and negligence, O lord of the gods, O wielder of a hundred sacrifices, a wondrous being has been born through the power of the Valakhilyas' austerity. He is the son of the sage Kashyapa and Vinata, a wanderer of the sky, mighty, able to take any form at will, who has come to steal the soma. This bird is capable of stealing the soma — the mightiest of the mighty; I believe he will accomplish even what is impossible.’”
