Sūta said: "Then, O best of the twice-born, when [the Valakhilyas' power] had thus grown [in Garuda], Garutman, king of birds, swiftly reached the gods. Seeing him, immensely powerful, [the gods] trembled on every side, and [their] weapons themselves began striking one another. There was [a guardian] of immeasurable might, radiant as lightning and fire — Bhauvana, the greatly valorous guardian of soma. By that king of birds, [striking] with wings, beak and claws, he was wounded and struck down in a brief, matchless battle. Raising a great cloud of dust with the wind of his wings and plunging the worlds into darkness, the wanderer of the sky showered it upon the gods. Showered with that dust, the gods fell into confusion; and, blinded, the guardians of the nectar did not see him. Thus Garuda shook the heavenly abode and struck the gods with blows of wing and beak. Then the thousand-eyed god (Indra) swiftly urged Vayu (the Wind): 'Disperse this shower of dust — this is your task, O Maruta.' And mighty Vayu swiftly blew away that dust; and when [the gloom] had cleared, the gods [again] began to press the bird. But, harried by the hosts of gods, [Garuda], roaring loudly like a thundercloud, terrifying all beings, the greatly valorous king of birds, slayer of enemy heroes, soared aloft. When he had risen into the air and stood above the gods, all the armored gods showered [him] with a variety of weapons — axes, maces, spears, clubs, blazing discs like the sun. Showered from every side with the casting of various weapons, the king of birds, waging a fierce battle, did not waver."
