"Roaring loudly in the sky, the valiant son of Vinata scattered the gods on every side with his wings and chest. Those gods, harried by Garuda, wounded by [his] claws and beak, fled, streaming abundantly with blood. The Sadhyas together with the Gandharvas [fled] to the east, the Vasus with the Rudras — to the south, the Adityas — to the west, the Nasatyas (the Ashvins) — to the north, harried by the king of birds, looking back again and again at the mighty foe. The wanderer of the sky fought with the valiant Ashvakranda, with the bird Renuka, with the brave Krathana, with Tapana, with Uluka and Shvasana, with Nimesha, with Praruja and Praliha [— the guardians of soma]. The son of Vinata struck them with the tips of his wings, claws and beak, enraged like [Shiva] with his Pinaka at the hour of the world's end. Greatly valorous, greatly zealous, they, wounded by him in many places, [lay] like massed clouds, pouring forth streams of blood. Having deprived them all of life, the best of birds pressed on toward the amrita [further] and saw fire everywhere, covering the whole sky with a great blaze, terrible, fanned by the wind, like a scorching sun. Then the swift, great-souled Garuda, having made [for himself] ninety times ninety (eight thousand one hundred) mouths, drank up the rivers with them in an instant, and, swiftly returning, doused that blazing fire with the rivers [he had brought]. Having quenched the fire, [Garuda], the scorcher of foes, took another, small form, wishing to enter [to the amrita]."
