The conclusion of the retelling places before Janamejaya the truth in all its bitterness — and prepares him for his choice. A twofold guilt is shown once more: the greed of Kashyapa, who, once bribed, left the king to perish (service corrupted by the desire for reward bears no fruit), and the malice of Takshaka, who destroyed the king through deceit. It is significant that the counselors do not urge the king toward revenge but simply lay out the truth and say, 'decide what to do next' — leaving the choice to him. Thus the scripture underscores the freedom of the will: faced with the same truth, a person remains free to choose forgiveness (as Shamika had counseled) or retribution. Here is the lesson that knowledge of events by itself does not determine one's action; everything is decided by the inclination of the heart. Parikshit, on learning of the sin, grieved over the sin; Janamejaya, however, as the next part will show, will burn with the desire for revenge. And though vengeance for an innocently slain father belongs to the spirit of a kshatriya's duty, once turned against the whole race of serpents it will become excessive — requiring the intervention of Astika. Thus one link of karma prepares the next, and the son's freedom of choice will determine the fate of countless serpents.
