अनुवाद

The Vasu gods said to her: 'O great river, for a small offense we have been cursed in anger by the great sage Vasishtha. All of us, in our confusion, once passed by Vasishtha, the best of sages, unseen and hidden as he performed his twilight worship, and slighted him. In his wrath he cursed us, saying: "Be born in a womb"; what is spoken by a proclaimer of Brahman cannot be undone. Therefore, becoming a human wife, bear us, the Vasus, on earth as your sons; for we do not wish to enter the impure womb of ordinary mortal women." Thus addressed, Ganga, having said to the Vasus 'so be it,' spoke further: "Who among mortals, best of men, shall be your father?" The Vasus said: "The son of Pratipa, the righteous king named Shantanu, will appear in the world of men; he shall be our father." Ganga said: "O sinless gods, as you have said, such is my intention as well; I shall do what pleases him, and this is what you desire." The Vasus said: "O you who flow through the three worlds, cast into the waters our sons as soon as they are born, so that in a short time we may be freed from this curse." Ganga said: "So I shall do; but let one son be allotted to him, so that his union with me for the sake of offspring may not be in vain." The Vasus said: "Each of us shall give an eighth part of his own vigor; by that vigor a son shall be born to you, and he shall be desired by Shantanu. But among mortals he shall have no offspring; therefore your son shall be childless, yet mighty."' Vaishampayana said: 'Thus the Vasus, having made this pact with Ganga, departed at once, their hearts rejoicing, according to their design.'
