Here Duhshala, the only daughter, is given in marriage to Jayadratha, king of Sindhu — and again, tellingly, 'with the consent of Shakuni.' Here we see how, imperceptibly, through marriages and counsel, the web of coming sorrow is woven: Shakuni, the evil genius of the Kauravas, has a hand in this too, and Jayadratha will become one of the fiercest enemies of the Pandavas — the one who, blocking their path, will enable the Kauravas to kill young Abhimanyu, and for that will fall by the hand of Arjuna. It is telling that a marriage alliance, contracted for the sake of friendship, turns into an increase of enmity: the son-in-law enters the camp of evil. Thus scripture, concluding the roster of Dhritarashtra's offspring, marks with its final stroke the threads of fate once more — through Shakuni and Jayadratha — reminding us that marriage alliances made without regard for dharma, and under the influence of evil counselors, prepare future grief.
