पाण्डुर् उवाच
अप्रजस्य महाभागा न द्वारं परिचक्षते ॥
स्वर्गे तेनाभितप्तो ऽहम् अप्रजस् तद् ब्रवीमि वः ॥
ऋणैश् चतुर्भिः संयुक्ता जायन्ते मनुजा भुवि ॥
पितृदेवर्षिमनुजदेयैः शतसहस्रशः ॥
एतानि तु यथाकालं यो न बुध्यति मानवः ॥
न तस्य लोकाः सन्तीति धर्मविद्भिः प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥
pāṇḍur uvāca
aprajasya mahābhāgā na dvāraṃ paricakṣate ||
svarge tenābhitapto 'ham aprajas tad bravīmi vaḥ ||
ṛṇaiś caturbhiḥ saṃyuktā jāyante manujā bhuvi ||
pitṛdevarṣimanujadeyaiḥ śatasahasraśaḥ ||
etāni tu yathākālaṃ yo na budhyati mānavaḥ ||
na tasya lokāḥ santīti dharmavidbhiḥ pratiṣṭhitam ||
Pandu said: "For the childless, O most fortunate ones, they do not point out the gate to heaven; therefore I am tormented about heaven, being childless — this I tell you. Burdened with four debts are men born on earth — debts owed to the ancestors, the gods, the sages, and men, by the hundreds of thousands. And whoever, being a man, does not become aware of these in due time, for him there are no blessed worlds — thus it is established by those who know dharma."

Here Pandu sets forth the Vedic teaching of the four debts (rina) with which a person is born. Telling in itself is this understanding of life as debt: in being born, a person is already indebted — to the ancestors (who gave body and lineage), to the gods (who sustain the world), to the sages (who transmitted knowledge), and to other people (among whom one lives). This teaching of varnashrama-dharma is true, but there is something still more important: the Bhagavatam declares (11.5.41) that one who has surrendered to Lord Hari, having set aside all worldly duties, remains indebted to no one — not to gods, sages, ancestors, or men — for devotion (bhakti) stands above all debts and discharges them at once. Thus Pandu's path — the path of duty and offspring — is legitimate and good for one walking the way of varnashrama; but there is a higher path still: one who has taken complete shelter of the Lord is free even from the very need for offspring as a means of deliverance. And yet, within the bounds of his own dharma, Pandu reasons rightly: to the childless are closed those worlds that are attained through a son.
