अग्निवेश्यं महाभागं भरद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ॥
प्रत्यपादयद् आग्नेयम् अस्त्रं धर्मभृतां वरः ॥
अग्निष्टुज् जातः स मुनिस् ततो भरतसत्तम ॥
भारद्वाजं तदाग्नेयं महास्त्रं प्रत्यपादयत् ॥

अनुवाद
"Bharadvaja, the valorous, best of upholders of dharma, gave the fire weapon Agneya to the magnanimous Agnivesya; and that muni, born from the agnishtut sacrifice, in turn gave that great fire weapon to the son of Bharadvaja -- Drona, O best of the Bharatas."

Here the succession of a sacred weapon through a chain of teachers reveals itself. Notable is that the fire weapon (agneya-astra) passes from Bharadvaja to Agnivesya, and from him to Drona: knowledge is transmitted through parampara, from teacher to disciple, and Drona receives it not apart from but through due succession. Here is the image of parampara, the chain of disciplic succession, by which sacred knowledge too is transmitted unchanged; so too the highest wisdom (as the Gita 4.2 teaches) descends through a chain of teachers. Notable also that the teachers themselves are of wondrous, fiery origin: sacred weapons are kept in worthy hands. Thus the scripture shows that Drona inherits not skill alone, but a power sanctified by succession.
